Founded by Mike Gilliam in 1974
In January 1974, Mike Gilliam opened the doors of Edmond Music with a simple vision: provide musicians with honest service, quality instruments, and knowledgeable people who genuinely care.
Mike's journey into music began long before opening the store. After learning piano tuning from his father, he developed a passion for helping musicians care for their instruments. That passion grew into a single neighborhood music store that quickly became a trusted part of the Edmond community.
Over the next five decades, generations of Oklahoma families would begin their musical journeys through those doors.
Long before Oklahoma Music Co. existed, another Oklahoma music institution was already helping generations of musicians begin their journey.
In 1936, Professor A. M. "Pappy" Larsen founded Larsen Music in downtown Oklahoma City. A respected music educator and community leader, Pappy believed that music had the power to enrich lives and strengthen communities. His passion for music education quickly made Larsen Music one of Oklahoma City's most recognized and beloved music stores.
Over the decades, Larsen Music become more than just a store—it became a tradition. Countless Oklahoma families purchased their very first instrument there, and generations of musicians still remember walking through its doors.
Following Pappy Larsen's retirement, ownership transitioned to John Tarr, who continued growing the business while preserving its reputation for exceptional service.
Years later, the store became part of the Edmond Music family under founder Mike Gilliam. Today, under the ownership of Scott and Susan Starns, Larsen Music proudly continues serving Oklahoma City as one of the five Oklahoma Music Co. locations.
While ownership has changed throughout the decades, one thing has remained constant: the Larsen name represents nearly ninety years of serving Oklahoma musicians with integrity, expertise, and a genuine love of music. Preserving that legacy continues to be one of our greatest honors.

In 2002, Scott Starns joined Edmond Music with plans to work as a piano tuner. After only a few months, he transitioned into full-time sales and quickly became an integral part of the company. Over the next two decades, he built relationships with schools, churches, teachers, and musicians across Oklahoma while helping grow the business.
Beginning in 2018, founder Mike Gilliam began transitioning ownership of the company to Scott and Susan Starns. After years of working alongside Mike and leading the company's growth, Scott and Susan became the full owners of the business on January 1, 2026.
That same year, the company's Edmond, Norman (Gilliam Music), and Oklahoma City (Larsen Music) locations were united under one name: Oklahoma Music Co. The new brand reflects one family-owned company serving musicians across Oklahoma while honoring the history and legacy of each individual store.
Today, Scott and Susan continue to lead Oklahoma Music Co. with the same commitment that has defined the company since 1974—providing exceptional service, trusted expertise, and a welcoming place where musicians of every age and experience level can thrive.
For more than 35 years, Midwest Music faithfully served musicians across western Oklahoma through its Enid and Weatherford locations under the leadership of Randy Hurst, a respected band director, educator, and longtime advocate for music education.
When Randy began preparing for retirement in 2026, both families shared the same goal: preserving the trusted relationships, knowledgeable staff, and commitment to music education that customers had relied on for generations.
For Scott Starns, the opportunity was especially meaningful. Scott was born in Altus and spent much of his childhood visiting family in Mooreland every summer, making this more than just an expansion - it was a chance to return to his western Oklahoma roots and continue serving the communities that helped shape him.
Today, the Enid and Weatherford stores proudly continue serving their communities as part of the Oklahoma Music Co. family. While the name has changed, the people, relationships, and dedication to musicians remain the same, ensuring Midwest Music's legacy continues for generations to come.
